I chose this paperback book cover as my typographical design example because it does an incredible job of guiding ones eye throughout its design.
The purpose of this cover design is to communicate a tittle, subtitle and author in a unique and compelling manor which might entice a consumer to pick it up off the shelf. Its objective is to communicate what kind of story the book tells. From this cover I would infer that this is a classic journey story with a humanistic narrative. Additionally, the illustrative and hand lettered elements create a sense of whimsy and adventure.
The sender of the message is the publisher, and its recipients are the booksellers and their customers.
The hand lettered typographical style along with its non-traditional directional schemes reinforce a sense of movement and emotional arcs. All of this is contained within the outline of a hand. This concept is relatively simple compared to other contemporary book covers but is still very effective with the design elements it utilizes.
The type on this cover is significant because it is wholly unique and would not have had the same effect if a more traditional type had been used.
